Bactifenin DS (Cotrimoxazole 960 mg)
For the use only of a Registered Medical Practitioner or a Hospital or a Laboratory.

Co-trimoxazole Tablets BP 960 mg.

Composition

Each uncoated tablet contains:

  • Trimethoprim BP 160 mg.
  • Suiphemethoxazole BP 800 mg.

Indications

Urinary Tract infections: Acute, chronic and recurrent urinary tract infections, eg. acute and chronic cystitis, chronic bacteriuria, pyelonephritis, urethritis and prostatitis.

Respiratory Tract Infections: Acute and chronic bronchitis, pneumonia, pharyngitis, otitis media, sinusitis (in infections due to group A phemolytic streptococci, the rate of eradication is not fully satisfactory).

Genital Infections: Acute gonococcal urethritis in both men and women.

GI Tract Infections: Typhoid and paratyphoid fever, typhoid carrier state, gastroenteritis due to shigella, cholera and other enteric infections.

Skin and Soft Tissue Infections: pyoderma, furuncles, abscesses and wounds.

Miscellaneous Infections: Brucellosis, subacute bacterial endocarditis, osteomyelitisand nocardiasis, and meningitis.

Dosage and Administration

Usual Dosage: 1 tab twice a day.

Minimum Dosage and Dosage for Long-Term Therapy: 1 tab a day.

Maximum Dosage: 3 tabs a day in divided doses.

Contra-Indications

Patients with megaloblastic bone marrow, severe renal failure and marked liver damage, history of hypersensitivity to sulfonamides. Not to be used in the treatment of streptococcal pharyngitis.

Dosage

Use in pregnancy & lactation
Bactifenin-DS should not be given to pregnant women and nursing mothers for the firs, few weeks.

Use ln Children

Not recommended for use in infants <2 months.

Precautions

The dosage interval should be increased from 12-24 hrs in patients with moderate renal failure.

It is suggested that regular haematological examinations should be made during prolonged courses of treatment.

An adequate fluid intake and urinary output should be maintained. it skin reactions appear, treatment must be discontinued.

Adverse Reactions

At the recommended dose, Bactifenin-DS is well tolerated. Adverse reactions have been reported in approximately 5-7% of patients treated in the published literature. In general, the adverse reactions correspond to those of a sulfonamide of moderately low toxicity.

Presentation

10 Tablets in a blister. 10 such blisters in an individual carton.
